Four Man Final - match report

21 January 2009. Venue - Crows Nest

Costello's 'A'
  1. John Daly
  2. Al Brown
  3. Steve Scrogham
  4. Larry McGlinchy
v
Red River
  1. Denis Horan
  2. Kyle Brown
  3. Tom Griffiths
  4. Russ Postlethwaite
Game 1 (John Daly v Denis Horan):
John was the first to pot a ball, this was the White in-off the break! After both players had only potted one ball each and with both sets of balls tied up, the game turned tactical. John over-hits a safety shot and Denis seized the chance by potting a long Yellow. He went on to clear all his remaining Yellow balls; having to swerve the White to pot his last one and leaving himself nicely on the Black. This he potted to win the first game of the match.
Game 2 (Al Brown v Kyle Brown):
Kyle kept up with tradition by knocking the White in-off during the break! With Al's first visit to the table he sinks two Yellows. After Kyle finds himself behind with only one Red potted and with Al having 4 balls remaining, Kyle puts his opponent in a snooker (total). Al fouls while attempting to get out of this difficult snooker. Kyle clears a Yellow covering a corner pocket and goes on to sink his remaining 6 Reds, leaving himself in an awkward position for the Black. He doubles the Black across the table and into the middle pocket to win the game.
Game 3 (Steve Scrogham v Tom Griffiths):
The game starts with a break that doesn't open the pack very much. Tom is the first to pot a ball (Reds), the White goes in-off during his next shot. When there are 3 Reds and 6 Yellows remaining, Steve creates the 1st snooker, Tom fouls and gives away 2 visits. The game continues with Tom getting out of 5 other snookers (one via 3 cushions!!!) and Steve potting 3 Yellows along the way. Tom misses when trying to get out of his 7th snooker. Steve clears a Red over a pocket and pockets 2 of his Yellows but leaves himself in an awkward position for his last Yellow. He tries to move it into a potable position but fails. Using his 2nd visit he puts Tom in a snooker (total) which Tom was unable to recover from. Steve clears up to win.
Game 4 (Larry McGlinchy v Russ Postlethwaite):
Again keeping to match's tradition Larry sends the white in-off during the break. Russ clears all the Reds and pots the Black to win. With a fine display of ball control he puts the Red River into a healthy 3-1 lead.
Game 5 - Doubles (John Daly & Al Brown v Denis Horan & Kyle Brown):
This was a tight game. With Costello's Al Brown at the table for his 5th visit. He had 6 Yellows remaining and his opponents had 4 Reds, two of which were covering a pocket each. Al fails to cut a Yellow into a corner pocket but manages to pot another Yellow in to it via a cannon! Al is on for a clearance but misses his last Yellow after trying a deep screw to get on the Black. Kyle puts Costello's in a total. With only one Yellow left John gets out of the snooker via a cushion.
During Kyles next visit to the table he pots 3 Reds and leaves the remaining one over the pocket. John tries to put the Red River in a snooker; he gets a double kiss to leave the Red on. Denis pots the Red and leaves himself a long shot for the Black. The Black is pocketed but the white sails into the opposite corner pocket. Denis may blame the cloth but I have my suspicions about his cue!.
The Game stands at: Red River 3 - Costello's 2
Game 6 - Doubles (Steve Scrogham & Larry McGlinchy v Tom Griffiths & Russ Postlethwaite):
The games starts with some cagey play from both teams, Al sinks the first balls (y) of the game. After about 15 minutes of play 3 Reds and 5 Yellows remain on the table. Russ steps up, he plays a nice 3-ball plant to pot a Red into a corner pocket, which had been been boxed in by 2 Yellows. Russ goes on to clear the remaining 2 Reds but manages to rattle the Black and leave it over a corner pocket. Steve puts the Red River in a tricky snooker (total). Tom was unable to get out of it."Foul, 2 visits, free table" cried the Ref! Larry pots a Yellow and uses his 2 visits to create another snooker, but leaves the black on via a slim gap between the Yellows. Can Russ do the business this time? He does! Potting the Black to win the game and match for the Red River.
